Day 3: #Heroine I can’t encompass all the women I admire for their roles in history , but these are just a few. Clockwise; My mother: She may not grace the pages of history books or be featured in a black history museum, but this woman makes up MY history. The way I strut, the way I nurture, my poise, the way my hands sit on my hip, my work ethic. They all come from her. My mother is definitely a pillar of strength, emigrated from Jamaica in December 1986 in search of a better life. She left behind her newborn baby boy in hopes of setting up a great life for him. Years later, she has managed to put 3 kids through college while raising two young ones. Assata Shakur; I consider her a heroine for her ability to defy what society deems a “typical woman” to some she may be fugitive but I consider her a renegade who stands as a poster child for standing up for your rights. Queen Nanny of the Maroons; She was essentially the Harriet Tubman mixed with a little bit of L’Overture for the people of Jamaica. She led revolts against countries that tried to enslave and colonize her people. She didn’t stop at saving herself but she worked to free other slaves. Zora Neale Hurston: A true literary genius who’s work speaks volumes into the struggles of a woman. She created works that are timeless and gave women a voice in the sea of black literature. #blkhistorychallenge #blackhistorychallenge (Taken with instagram)
